34a David Jones at Creative Quarter Collective (Stoneleigh Arms)

Artform: Ceramics, Digital art, Installation, Sculpture
My work commenced in the field of Raku – both the Japanese and the American versions of the craft. The Japanese tradition of tea-bowls (chawan) is particularly significant, since the vessels were experienced through touch as much as visually. I have been influenced by the ways they were handled – not just in terms of ownership from potter to Tea aficionado, but also the stories they embodied that manifested during the tea drinking ritual which were central to their meaning. As a contemporary maker, there is a tension that has evolved in my ceramics between the austere wabi-sabi ethos of the Zen masters and the expressionist statements of the American re-inventers of raku in the 1970s.
Ceramics is an inter-personal exchange; my work considers form, enclosed space and surface as modes of communication. The pieces refer to containment; the ancient role of the vessel was to hold fluids and food; now they carry ideas/meaning. Some of that meaning concerns our own identity.
