15a Clay & Ash at Art at St Mark’s Leamington

Artform: Ceramics, Sculpture
Coming to ceramics in later life, I’ve been particularly inspired by Japanese and Korean ceramics.
From studying the work of these countries’ potters through the ages, my main interests in decorating is by using ash glazes, many of which I develop myself.
Not exclusively, I’m also exploring shino and oribe glazes and love working with tenmoku and celadon glazes.
I have also been inspired by the mark-making that is evident within other aspects of their cultures. Found in unexpected places it is interesting to study their evolution from their original roots.
Firing mainly in a reduction atmosphere in a gas kiln which brings out all that is best from these types of glazes. In the hands of the kiln gods, a phrase often used, there is no knowing how good a piece can be. Inspiring future experimentation, it is all part of the journey and the adventure.
