Going with the idea that much of what we know and understand cannot be expressed in words, my forms can be used as tools to facilitate fresh ways of looking and fresh ways of understanding. My work is not concerned with beauty, emotion, craft skill, ‘a celebration of’, ‘capturing a moment’ or the like – which of course are all valid focii – but concerns itself with disruption and questioning. The often resulting conflict may ‘come out’ in the form of humour.

My work is mainly in steel but sometimes in other media depending on what fresh experiences any particular medium might bring. The work often draws on established ways of doing things but sometimes not. Having learned that traditional craft skills and aesthetics can be both enabling and limiting and I regulate my relationship with them accordingly. For example, if my work seems cliched, I explore why this might be and what to do about it (if anything) using experience and experimentation.
