Molly Acacia Hughes

(Watercolour A2), this piece details a surreal flow of fluttering shapes based on moth wings, the pigments within the scales on their wings form these eye like arrangements, and here they are removed from their function and context, the symmetry of 'wings' being removed.(Watercolour A2), designed to be digitally printed onto a large piece of silk fabric. This project centred around the camouflage versus eye catching nature of butterflies wings, notably the fact that the underside of the wing and the top side usually differ in function and colouration.(Watercolour & pen, A2)(Watercolour & pen, A2)(Pen drawing, A3) Study of native British flora found along waterways. Biography

Molly Acacia Hughes specialised in printed textiles at Loughborough University, graduating in 2022. With a background in fine art, studying at Stratford-Upon-Avon College before starting a Textiles Degree, Molly draws inspiration from the tiny details in nature. Endlessly fascinated by the patterns in natural forms such as flora, feathers, wings, butterflies and birds, Molly takes the repetitive patterns, shapes and rhythms within these forms to create her artworks. With a nod to art Deco and Nouveau compositions, swooping curves and swirling borders, her artistic style is constantly shifting to examine and document the natural forms that inspire her. From textiles processes to watercolour painting, developing print designs for wallpapers and fabrics, as well as Jacquard. She has practiced multiple disciplines, most recently starting a small business selling hand made hair accessories made from reclaimed and remnant vintage fabrics.

Molly and her colleague Ellie Carr-Smith co-founded Studio Mead (based at the Brook Arts Hub in Shottery, Stratford-Upon-Avon) to run specialist workshops in rug tufting and screen-printing. The pair met whilst hand screen printing wallpaper and fabric runs for a high end interior textiles design house. Molly also worked as a silk screen technician for a corporate merchandise printing company, where she developed more specialised skills in the processes of stencil making and multilayer screen printing. Taking their skills and passion for textile design, the pair want to facilitate responsibly designed, small batch making. With an emphasis on individuality and personal growth, letting people evolve ideas and providing the technical help and advice to push creativity.
