Biography
Ray Spence is a fine art photographer, a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society, and is a recipient of the prestigious Fenton Medal. Now retired from lecturing in Photography he concentrates on making fine art monochrome prints from unique glass plate negatives using a Victorian process called “wetplate collodion”. Ray’s work has been exhibited widely, including at the Herbert Art Gallery in Coventry, the Royal Photographic Society, Oxo Tower Gallery, London, and the Manege Gallery in Saint Petersburg, Russia. He is a prolific author having produced many articles and books on photography. Originally a biologist, much of Ray’s work centres on natural forms such as plants and the human body. Ray is also the organiser of the annual UK Wetplate Weekend held at Guys Cliffe House in Warwick every August, attracting photographers from all over the UK, Finland, Germany, and the USA.
