Biography

At Hand-Inc, we specialise in creating artwork by blending the charm of vintage and modern letterpress type, illustration and hand lettering. It is crafted using traditional letterpress techniques, enhanced with contemporary technology and innovative ideas. We capture the process of how our artwork is made and it forms part of the story. We are passionate about type, lettering, and illustration and we love sharing our expertise through hands-on workshops.

Our letterpress studio is home to a 25 year letterpress collection which started as a hobby confined to the garage that quickly spread to the house. Since 2017 it has had it’s own studio space. The collection has grown over the years and continues to grow by sourcing specific traditional wood type and creating newly cut wood type.

The studio is based in Dunchurch Warwickshire, and has studio open days during the year as well as running workshops, please follow us on Instagram to hear what’s happening first.

Steve and Amy have a shared love for printing and typography and their combined skills create Hand-inc’s signature approach to creative projects. At a time when heritage crafts are on the decline Amy and Steve are part of a revival to keep the skills alive by creating new contemporary artwork for agencies and brands, as well as limited runs as original prints.

Amy Lay is a graphic designer and illustrator, born in Warwickshire. She studied illustration and print making at the North East Wales Institute and has since worked in digital design, lettering and illustration. She has developed her skills in calligraphy since her college days and uses them at Hand-inc for commercial design work and combined with letterpress printing and illustrations

Steve Lay is a graphic designer and illustrator, born in Wiltshire. He studied illustration and print making at the North East Wales Institute and has since worked in advertising and design. He has collected letterpress type and presses for over 20 years. He is passionate about typography and preserving this heritage craft for future generations.
