Biography

The landscape of the British Isles is always my inspiration, and its geology and history provides a wealth of ideas for paintings. The human historical use of the land itself, reveals and then covers up what was once visible. Furthermore, our inclement weather will always add visual intrigue to the landscape, I like the sense of mystery behind these two concepts. This sense of the ‘seen’ and then ‘unseen’ fuels my curiosity, and links well with my painting process.

A mix of oil paints and cold wax makes the perfect body to quickly build up many layers of paint. Scraping into the layers with a variety of tools and solvents reveals areas of the history that lies beneath, some of which will still be visible in the finished painting. This process of construction and deconstruction continues until a composition resonates with my intentions for the piece. Lying somewhere between abstraction and representation, I hope that the viewer will connect with my paintings in their own personal way.
