Biography
Resident printmaker at Art at the Alex, James Street, Rugby, I create lino and woodcut prints that flow from my encounters with humanity in all its messiness.
I spent a career designing and making creative outputs for other people: companies; charities; educators; government. My portfolio included sex-education materials, corporate presentations, information graphics. When the corporate world became stressful I wrote and drew satirical comics to amuse my equally stressed colleagues.
Now I print. For myself. Print comes out of drawing. And drawing comes out of looking. At the world. Mediating the process through the dance of hand and heart and eye. Each stage in the process, each set of tools make different marks, introduce their own accidents. Bear evidence of the clumsiness of being human. And then the final image, the mirror of the one I’ve been working on. This is the joy of printing.
Art is not perfection. It is the evidence of having taken on something larger than yourself. At its best, it is evidence of having arm-wrestled with God. And lost. But lost in grand style.
