Biography

At the centre of my art is the lived experience that creativity meets a deep need in us, whatever our life circumstances and in whatever form that may take. I capture a childlike sense of wonder in my colourful acrylic paintings. I took up painting again, after many years, during the covid lockdown 2020. I find painting lifts me out of grim reality into another world, a world of happiness, tranquility and idealism. I hope you too will glimpse something of a world beyond when you look at my art.

I’m inspired both by the landscape of the north island, New Zealand, and also by the illustrations of JRR Tolkien, fantasy author and illustrator, who created Middle Earth. Not only did he invent races of beings, languages, and geographical realms, but he visualised an entire cosmology and spiritual background for his created world. I hope to capture in visual terms a glimpse of that world of magical landscapes and trees of life which is home to, perhaps, such races as the hobbits and the Elves. 

My art is all about returning to childhood; through it I hope viewers may for a while rediscover their own early innocence and idealism.
