Jo enjoys holding Fused Glass workshops for beginners or those with some experience in her studio in her lovely garden in the Warwickshire countryside. Details are contained in the 'Workshop' section of this website.
Jo’s passion for working with fused glass was kindled over 20 years ago during an evening class in central London, and has continued to grow since then, particularly during the last 5 years when she has had time and space to devote to it.
Jo was initially inspired by the intrinsic beauty of glass itself. She works mainly with transparent glass as this enables ambient light to reflect, refract or diffuse to enhance the beauty of the object. Different glass reacts differently in the kiln, and thus each piece of work is unique. Jo always finds it exciting to open the kiln to see the final result, and this increases her motivation to experiment with colour and texture to create something beautiful and new.
Many of Jo’s pieces have been inspired by the natural world, with blues and greens featuring prominently. This is particularly evident in her newer sculptural and decorative pieces of work. Mathematics and Art deco are life-long interests and this is also visible in her portfolio which includes clocks, glass topped tables, and decorative bowls. Although many of the finished pieces have a practical use, all are designed to showcase the beauty of the glass.
As an artist Jo is keen to develop her skills and expertise, and grasps any opportunity to do so. Learning new techniques and discovering new possibilities is a further source of inspiration, and this is evident in the progression shown in her work. Jo’s work has always had a sculptural element, and this aspect in particular has been developed over the last 2 years as her skills and mastery of technique has grown. She is currently experimenting with ways of using the kiln to ‘bend’ glass, and those who are familiar with her work will see new additions to her portfolio this year.
Jo has only recently had time to devote to working with glass, and exhibited for the first time at Warwickshire Open Studios and Art in the Park in 2018. Both were hugely satisfying because of the opportunities they gave for interacting with the public and for sharing her enthusiasm for fused glass. Jo is now a regular exhibitor at local events and the appreciation of her work shown by visitors and fellow artists has been a great source of inspiration.
Jo is a founder member of Kenilworth Artists who were formed in 2018 and have become a strong community group promoting visual arts in the town.
