I enjoy the dramatics of weather; high winds, heavy clouds and downpours of rain. Although based in the Midlands, as far away from the sea as possible on this small island I have always been drawn to coastal areas, attracted as I am by the movement of water and clouds. I spend time walking and taking in the drama of it all and capturing the atmosphere, I am less interested in capturing a realistic image of my surroundings than in creating the feel of place. I have a sketch book in which to note contours of the land, marks, colours, and I always have the camera ready to catch that otherwise elusive moment! Back in the studio, the landscape which appears on the canvas is layered over by memories of place.
