Region: Stratford-upon-Avon
Artform: Ceramics
I create ceramics using different techniques and clays, including porcelain. Simple shapes have been transformed and accentuated with colours and textures that give my work individual characteristics, and act as a vehicle for self expression. My inspiration comes from the colours and shapes of flora and fauna interpreted as surface decoration using slips, oxides and glazes. These are applied using Chinese brushes and layered to create abstract designs. I work from many photographs which I take during my visits. The vitality, textures and colours of landscapes are a joy, but challenging to recreate. The pots represent 3D paintings, different as the pot is turned around. The work is hand-built using coiling or slabbing techniques, and fired in an electric kiln to 1270c. Many pots are fired several times to achieve the desired result. The whole process is very labour intensive and results are unpredictable. I suppose that’s what keeps me going!
