Artform: Installation, Mixed media, Textiles
Sarah Leigh is a Birmingham based textile artist, who uses the medium of felt-making to create sculptural lighting and display pods for plants – all inspired by forms and textures found in nature.
She was previously a graphic designer, but craved the tactile connection with an organic material. After years of experimenting with other media, she joined a mixed textiles class and instantly loved the process of felting. Transforming fibres into a sheet of fabric ignited a new passion, and led to her establishing her new creative practice.
Combining wool and light led her to create tactile lampshades under the Felti label, but these were soon replaced by more sculptural forms inspired by nature – oversized seed pods and towering bark textured sleeves proved challenging but ultimately rewarding. She has created large installations for an environmental festival and received commissions from restaurants and private customers.
She now offers workshops from her new studio in Kings Heath.
