My paintings can start with any visual prompt – a landscape, a detail of a building, a glimpsed reflection, or an object in a museum. From that starting point I try to create something new and original by building up colour and texture in many layers (some of which may be removed later), until I reach what I feel to be a point of equilibrium. Some paintings come quickly, while others may take years to complete. I am usually aiming to achieve a calm and meditative atmosphere in the finished work.
