For 2025 I am exploring ‘Liminal Space’ and how to make paintings that evoke transitional or transformative spaces, such as those between past and present, hidden and revealed, thought and reality, and the mystery of the horizon line in landscapes.
It presents an interesting challenge, but one to which I believe my painting process might comfortably lend itself. Mixing oil paints with cold wax medium allows me to build up many layers that I can then scrape back into revealing the history beneath.
Liminal space imagery often depicts the sense of “in-between”, capturing interposed places, or states, and are often associated with shifts from one moment in time to another.
Physical landscape and structures are continually shaped and weathered by the elements, time and interference. Similarly, the metaphorical landscape of our minds creates memories that take form and then just as quickly fade, only to re-emerge again, perhaps slightly altered. I have a lot of exploring to do!
