Art at the Glasshouse
Region: Leamington Spa
Artform: Ceramics
I throw my ceramics on the wheel and, after firing, glaze them with my homemade glazes. The most used glaze is based on an ancient Chinese Chun glaze that originates in traditional glazing from over a thousand years ago. It has evolved into a multitude of Chun glazes, from browns and greens to whites and blues. The turquoise blue Chun recipe was presented to me by my teacher in California over a decade ago and I have adapted it to match my clays. This makes me part of the tradition, adding, developing, and evolving the art of glaze making.
I am always looking for ways to refine the use of glazes, create new patterns, and experiment with what else could be achieved. Two glazes together begin to bring new hints of a colour. This is the beauty of the firing at high temperatures: what will come out?
