I hand throw in smooth porcelain stoneware to make small bowls & vases. While still on the wheel some are turned & burnished with damp leather to give the smooth surface; others, when dry enough, are sanded to create a rough or smooth surface for glazing.
My main output is concentrated on small-scale hand-held pieces; when bisque I then glaze them with two basic glazes; some of my pieces have different coloured glass added to the centre and this often creates a chemical reaction between the glass and the glazes. All pots are then stoneware fired to between 1220°c and 1280°c.
Dot and I share workshop studio space in the converted washhouse in our cottage garden. To me, throwing is about how I feel; it is a very personal responsive tactile meditational experience. When I sit down with a ball of clay I let the clay intuitively take me on a journey.
