My speciality is free machine embroidery – it’s sometimes called thread painting. I use my art as meditation. I create what the spirit inspires me to make. My starting point might be a photograph, a bag of fabric, or an idea. That’s why there is such variety in my artistic style, materials, and subject matter. I quite simply, just make and do.
I enjoy creating lifelike embroideries of animals and landscapes. To escape the realism, I venture into my imaginary world. I sew fictitious people, legends or creatures. These imaginations turn into soft sculpted dolls. I adorn their fragile cloth outfits with beads and foils, adding found or created objects to form the narrative.
I use snips of material and yarn to create my own fabric. It’s lovely to use up magical bits and pieces that would normally be thrown away. This facet of my work allows me to have fun and experiment with new techniques and mediums. I turn some of these abstract pieces into jewellery to become wearable art forms.
