The nature of how music surrounds and enfolds me is what drives my approach to painting.
Total immersion and the meditative rhythm of mark making happens when I respond to music. The solitary existence of being beside the sea seems to mimic being in the studio with my music.
I do not want to paint yet another sea painting, but rather convey to the viewer my connections and feelings that the sea evokes. The sea provides a deep meditative quality. I feel almost part of it, movements, colours and sounds.
My paintings are on board, canvas and paper. Oils, acrylics, gouache, pen, pencil, charcoal and natural pigments are all used in my work. I rarely sketch, preferring to allow myself to absorb the colours, feelings and sounds.
Recently I have been using the sea to produce the painting, allowing pigments and canvas to be washed by the sea.
