My landscapes and seascapes are suffused with the idea of fleeting memory, past, present and those yet to come. My paintings are made using mixed media and a combination of tools creating a variety of marks. I have painted and drawn since I was a child and I work throughout the seasons in the open air to quickly capture a changing scene, then reinterpret the same place from memory back in my studio. I try to paint a feeling rather than a copy, allowing the painting to take on its own life, with changing light and minute-by-minute changes in nature. You never know what the weather will do. I always trust my memory when completing the work back in the studio. My observations and paintings are over a large timescale, whereas a photograph captures a snapshot of the moment. This allows me to soak up where I am and allows my memory to intrude and influence my observations. My working studio will also be open during the Summer Art Weeks for anybody interested in how and where I work.
