My work is inspired by landscapes of different countries and natural forms like trees and flowers. I work from photographs, depicting the colours and textures of these landscapes in ceramic materials. The pots are hand built using diverse forming techniques like coiling and slabbing. When the pots are bone dry they are biscuit fired in an electric kiln to 1000c. They are still porous at this stage, but safer for me to handle. The colours are painted on in several layers using slips, oxides and glazes. The pots are then fired to 1260c. I try to create 3D paintings with a different view as the pot is rotated. Many pieces are fired several times with more glazes added to achieve the desired results. The process is very labour intensive and the outcome unpredictable, which keeps me going. When I open the kiln, it could be a wow factor or shut it quick and go get a coffee!
