I paint where I am. In my house, in my garden, walking through the village, in the orchard at Canalside Community Food, and France, Spain and tropical places – Trinidad, Costa Rica.
I make sketches, small paintings, often using my iPad, take a few photos, or more usefully a short video. Back home, or in the studio at Warwickshire College, I use this material to remember the place and then use these ‘memories’ to paint my picture. Working in acrylics or oils I have developed a stylised treatment of the subject, drawing out the aspects which weigh strongest with me, be it colour, shapes or atmosphere.
In choosing my subjects I come back to two dominant themes: the power and strength of the natural world, where even my flowers brought inside are straining to grow or escape back to outside; and the fascination with what can be just seen in the distance or through what is in front of you. Which may be more beautiful, interesting or exciting?
