My current series of work is an intuitive, abstract approach to English landscape. With ‘air’ and ‘earth’ as my starting points, I’m exploring the effect that different atmospheres have on the landscape, and also the effect of time, history and geology on the landscape beneath our feet. The ‘Air’ paintings are built up with layers of oil paint on canvas, continually revealing and obscuring the visual elements as I work. The ‘Earth’ paintings are cold wax and oil on cradled birchwood panels. Building up layer upon layer of paint I can dig, scrape and ’excavate’ back into the depth of paint, revealing the history that lies beneath. Suggestions of Anglo Saxon treasure, Roman mosaics or fragments of pottery and the like may call to mind cultures and lives from times past. Delving even further back in time, layers of rocks and minerals and our geological history all provide me with an endless wealth of inspiration. My paintings do not need frames and are ready to hang just as they are.
