"There are only two great subjects which sooner or later an artist has to confront – love and death. Having embraced these, everything else seems trivial. So you go on, trying to avoid sentimentality or the macabre (cheap tricks these) with the ‘dogs’ of age, boredom, failure and obscurity snapping at your heels."
