I am on a journey of discovery. Taking ideas from sketches and photographs of journeys, or areas passed through perhaps on foot, I am enjoying exploring materials and techniques to create an atmosphere, a moment in time, and to perhaps draw the viewer into a narrative of their own making. The result might recall a memory of something similar, or vaguely familiar, and although the starting point is always an actual place, the finished work could suggest anywhere. The varying landscape throughout the British Isles has always been a great love and it is always special when I recall the feelings I had travelling past fields, or walking along the seashore, or through mountains, from the Outer Hebrides to the Cornish coast. The enjoyment, and sometimes frustration, of mixing colours, applying paint to canvas with brushes, palette knives, rags, fingers, scraping off and reworking, is another journey of discovery and I never know where this one is taking me. And that really is exciting!
