I explore colour and texture using a range of materials and techniques. Pieces often begin as a collage of fabrics, dyed, painted or printed, machine-stitched together before being over-sewn with layers of hand embroidery and other embellishments such as beads, buttons and foils. Some are landscapes, celebrating the beauty of rural Warwicksire while others are more abstract, compositions of fabrics and stitch with the imperfections of the materials - frayed edges and hanging threads - adding to the richness of the whole. Every scrap of fabric has a secret back story and each piece of my work has it's own story too. This is often alluded to in the title.
I hope my textile art pays some sort of tribute to all the generations of women throughout history who darned, knitted and stitched to keep their families warm and their homes beautiful. I do like to think that In my own small way I'm continuing that noble and undervalued tradition and each piece is an act of love.
