My work explores emotion & humanness. I am interested in tension between freedom and forces defining our reality. These can include power, inequality, prejudice, marketing, environment, religion, relationships & social psychological factors.
I try to create semi-abstract landscapes & forms, which are free from co-opted meaning. Impasto, wax, oils and decay work variously to evoke unresolved complexity. My series 'Hinterland' is inspired by the outermost reaches of our island. The outliers, the remote & 'the back of beyond.' The term Hinterland represents both a breadth of knowledge, and that far beyond what can be fully known. The wild Scottish Highlands and those lands lying behind the Cornish Coast embody personal experience & distant, corroded memory. Edges of emotion are explored in jagged roughness, light & ethereal tenderness. The work can be course fragile & temporal. It addresses vulnerability, alienation & agency. Influences include Colour Field Works, Gutia & Graffitism.
