Hi there, I'm Mark and I am the owner of UK Fractal Burn, all the wood I use is sourced from local timber suppliers/sawmills and other enthusiasts who may have wood going spare that is of no use to them. Once sourced and cut down for transportation the next step is cutting the pieces to the sizes I need/want at the time. This, is gratefully assisted by the Father In Law (Mike), as his garage has been turned in to a workshop. Once cut and planed it's back home with me to prep the piece before burning.
Fractal burning is also referred to as Lichtenberg burning, the effect of a burn caused by electricity. My machine was helpfully put together by one of my oldest friends (Big Scary Tom), who thankfully is a qualified electrician yet making this machine was a first for him too. Taking safety into consideration was a must as I'm messing around with 10,000volts so if I mess up, I won't be here anymore.
Each piece I create is unique as no two burns will come out the same, I can influence the direction slightly yet the electricity will go where it wants to go. After burning the wood, there are several stages prior to applying the epoxy resin to the pieces, then alot of sanding to achieve a smooth finish. Due to the resin settling there will always be a slight dip where the resin is at its deepest, however this is only slight and easily wipe-able to clean down.
