As an architect and lecturer I am always drawing and thinking about both buildings and cities, so it is perhaps a natural progression that I have sought to draw and paint both in my spare time. I was born in Leamington and then moved to Coventry, so the opportunity to exhibit at Lansdowne Circus as part of Warwickshire Open Studios gave me the chance to revisit and draw scenes from my childhood that have up until now remained as pictures just in my mind.
Church Terrace is the street that my mother’s family moved to from Ireland in the early 50s and is always a point of discussion when in that part of town. The view from the Campion Hills is one that I recall fondly as it was once the site of a particularly long children’s slide that I visited regularly and by chance afforded views of Leamington below.
The above linked video contains completed works as well as images from one of my travel sketch books. These books always accompany family holidays and form the starting point of new techniques and trials with composition. Always drawn directly in ink while in situ and then most often, painted in watercolour afterwards.
