I came to painting about 15 years ago after many years of working with clay, batik, textiles and as a product designer.
For the last 17 years I have run my own costume hire business from home, I paint more in the summer months when work is quieter. My artwork will be displayed in the costume rooms within my house.
Much of my work is inspired by trips to St Ives in Cornwall. I sketch and take photographs whilst I am there to use to paint from in my studio at home. I have developed series of oil pastel drawings of boats in St ives harbour. The medium allows me to capture the intense colours of the painted boats and the shapes in the sand and water as the light catches the surface.
I also enjoy painting wildflowers, finding the order amongst the chaos, I look for patterns in my compositions and enjoy picking out the subtle differences between the colours in the leaves and petals. I try to capture fragility, movement and the contours of the surfaces. There is some thing very therapeutic about applying paint to a canvas, leaving a mark, creating shapes, expressing colour and light. I am always excited to see what I can do next!
