Ettington Church

Artform: Ceramics
My Work is inspired by the Landscapes of many countries I have visited over the years, including Canada, Australia and India. The vitality, textures and colours in landscapes are a joy, yet challenging to work from. I usually work from photographs and create 3D paintings with a different view as the pot is turned around.
The pots are hand built using coiling or slabbing techniques. I want my work to look organic, earthy and natural. All the surface decorations are applied in layers using several brushes. To achieve the textures and colours, I use slips, oxides and several glazes to achieve landscape impressions. The pots are fired in an electric kiln to 1270C. Many pots are fired several times to get the desired result.
The whole process is very labour intensive and the results unpredictable, which keeps me going.
