Chris Doherty
Artform: Painting
My artistic practice is grounded in a relationship with the concept of ‘landscape’. Using oil and acrylics, my paintings are organic in their approach, allowing a life-long fascination with the movement of water and cloud, and the often contradictory experience of the land around, to produce atmospheric and colourful inventions. The work evolves from memory: sometimes through walking, sometimes through recent travels: all taking in the atmosphere of the place, noting the changing light and dark moods of the day. Back at the studio, surrounded by sketches and photographs, I am energised by the action of intuitive and instinctual mark making; often re-tracing my steps and allowing the semi abstract paintings to come alive.
