I’d describe myself as a creative all-rounder! I’ve an A-level in ‘Fine art and Ceramics’ and a Degree in ‘Industrial Design & Technology’. Currently, I run my own Costume Hire business from my home in Leamington Spa, with about 1000 costumes in my collection. Between customers I paint; whatever inspires me, often flowers, sometimes portraits or seascapes and I also do pet portraits by commission.
I paint ‘alla prima’ which is a painting technique used mainly with oil paint, in which layers of wet paint are applied to previously administered layers of wet paint. The technique requires a fast way of working because the work must be finished before the first layers have dried.
I’ve recently started using firm, coarse, flat brushes to really sculpt the paint, revealing the direction of the brush marks and adding interest where one colour catches on the next. For me, emphasizing individual brush strokes adds energy to a painting. The viewer can engage with the process because, with thick paint on a smooth surface, the direction and intent remain visible.
Instagram is my online art gallery of choice! I have many favourite artists some for their use of colour, others for their simplicity of line and form. Artists have always inspired each other and I love learning from other people’s work, studying their techniques and letting their ideas inform my own style. When possible, I attend workshops with those I consider to be experts in their field of work. I feel it’s important to keep learning and evolving creatively. I hope to pass all their insights and wisdom onto my own students in years to come.
I’m always aiming to produce a piece of art that is full of character and colour. A good composition and the freedom to experiment with colour and interesting brush marks is what inspires me most and what I enjoy teaching others.
I’ve exhibited in ‘Warwickshire Open Studios’ and taken part in ‘Landscape Artist of the Year’ as a wildcard artist.
