Sarah Methuen is a multi disciplinary artist. She has a Masters degree in Fine Art from the Birmingham School of Art and has been an educator in the combined creative sectors of art, theatre and wellbeing for over twenty years.
Her first paid engagement as a working artist was in the late 80’s as a prop maker for the Royal Shakespeare Company. This provided the best of training grounds and sowed the seeds for Sarah to become a creative practitioner who is unafraid of any medium and thrives on challenge.
She is showing paintings from her ‘Nostalgia’ series, as part of Warwickshire Open Studios and is delighted to be in residence at The Courtyard Gallery, Stratford upon Avon.
The work combines the incidental, abstract marks of watercolour paint applied through silk screen, with the light activating quality of applied gold and silver metal leaf. Her process is based on responses to the marks made and compositions discovered within the ‘accidental’ watercolour forms. The finished effect is reminiscent of fantastical and epic planetary landscapes. It is easy to become lost in the energy and elemental rhythm of this work. Each original piece is unique, unrepeatable and captures a moment in fleeting time, locking it down and spurring us to consider how we fit into the energy of the universe.
